Main Challenges for Indonesians Who Work and Live in Japan
When deciding whether to work for a Japanese company, it is important to consider all of the potential advantages and disadvantages. While there are many monetary and non-monetary benefits, and a strong sense of family and belonging, there are issues that can be difficult for those from outside the culture to adapt to. Before making a decision, it is important to ask yourself if you can live with these.
Cons of Working and Living in Japan
Seniority & Hierarchy
In many organizations across the world, such as military academies, private schools in Europe, and fraternities at U.S. Universities, newcomers are expected to show respect to those of higher rank or status. Similarly, seniority is highly valued in Japanese organizations, including businesses, clubs, sports teams, and social groups. Rank and status play a large role in Japanese corporate culture. Interactions between employees often depend on the relative positions each holds in the organization, and individual expectations of how others should interact with them likewise depends on their position in the hierarchy. Seniority and hierarchy are important aspects of the work culture and should be observed at all times.
Long Working Hours
In Japan, there is a long-standing culture of hard work and long working hours that has been passed down throughout the generations. Working hours are formally outlined, but employees in Japan's tech industry often work beyond the designated hours. This has resulted in some extreme records of overtime and has even caused deaths due to overwork, a phenomenon known as karoshi. The government has recognized this issue and has taken measures such as encouraging businesses to reduce working hours and increase compensation for employees. However, the practice of long hours has yet to be significantly changed. It is not uncommon to see people sleeping on the train or in staircases on their way home due to exhaustion from overworking.
Lack of Privacy at Work
Having a designated office cubicle is something that can often be taken for granted in other countries, but for foreign workers in Japan, it can be a luxury. In Japan, many companies often provide long tables or round office tables for their employees, which means that the only thing separating one from their neighboring workmate could be a few office supplies.
This system is often associated with the hierarchical structure found in Japan, where usually only the seniors are allocated the more comfortable chairs per table and the executives are the only members of the company who have the privilege of their own cubicle.
Indirect Communication
Communication styles in Japanese culture emphasize the importance of preserving harmony. Rather than directly expressing negativity, such as insults or criticism, Japanese often use indirect communication in order to express disagreeable topics. This is done by using fewer words and subtler expressions, like body language and tone of voice. Metaphors are also frequently used in Japanese literature, as well as in verbal communication. Oftentimes, subjects may be left out in sentences, as it is assumed that the speaker's context is shared and understood.
Language Barriers
When traveling or working in Japan, understanding the language can be a challenge. However, with the increasing availability of destinations and signs written in English, navigating around is becoming easier. Taxis are usually trustworthy and do not require any bargaining. While public transportation is usually clearly indicated, not all restaurants and toilets have signs in English. Plastic displays and menus with photos may be used to help determine what kind of food is being served. Those who are unfamiliar with the language may find it difficult to read the Kanji shown on signs and may need to take some time to discern the patterns and place names. This is especially true when the topic is intricate and delicate.
Flexible Job Descriptions
When looking for a job in Japan, it is important to keep in mind that full-time employees may be expected to take on a variety of tasks, rather than just the specific duties associated with a particular job title. Furthermore, job roles may change to other duties that were not even listed in the job description. Japanese companies may also transfer their employees around to different departments or even locations, a practice known as “tenki”. Therefore, employees should be prepared for change and be open to taking on new and different responsibilities.
Moderate Approach to Innovations
When it comes to innovation, some Japanese companies tend to be more hesitant compared to those in the West. This cautious attitude favors well-established strategies and technologies over bold, new ideas. Consequently, those working in the IT industry in Japan can find it challenging to keep up with the pace of change and rapidly developing technologies in the West. It is
important to be mindful of the corporate culture and slower pace of innovation in Japan.
Conclusion
Working and living in Japan can have some pros and cons. However, it is important to note that these drawbacks will not always be the case. Therefore, when searching for a full-time job, it is beneficial to take this information into account and be prepared to ask questions about any possible issues during the interview process.

WORKING OVERSEAS & REMOTE WORK: TAX
Where and how to pay taxes, whether you are an expat living overseas, or working remotely for an overseas company, may seem like a simple question but there is no simple answer. Even the most basic parts of paying taxes will depend largely on several factors including your country of residence, length of residence, the location of the employer, dual taxation treaties with the countries involved, and more. There’s no one answer fits all solution (not even here!), you’ll have to do some research. But here are some things you will need to think about: WHERE TO FILE TAXESAs a general rule one must file and pay taxes in your country of residence (determined by the length of your term of residence). This means if one is a resident of the United States and their income is from working remotely in Japan, they would file taxes in the United States. Alternatively, if a US citizen were living and working in Japan, they would file & pay taxes in Japan while being exempt from US taxes up to a certain limit. Each country will have different rules regarding the length of time one must be out of the country to be considered a non-resident for tax purposes.Note that even some countries with double taxation agreements (see below) require expats to file taxes in their home country as well. Even if they are not required to pay any taxes due to foreign income exclusion and residency rules, they are still required to file to prove their exclusion and show their income. COUNTRIES WITH AGREEMENTS TO AVOID DOUBLE TAXATION IN JAPANCurrently, Japan has agreements to avoid double taxation with quite a long list of countries; China, Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, the United States, and Vietnam are among the countries that have some form of tax treaty with Japan. For a full list of countries with tax agreements with Japan, consult the Ministry of Finance, Japan. The current list can be viewed athttps://www.mof.go.jp/english/policy/tax_policy/tax_conventions/tax_convetion_list_en.htmlEXCLUSIONS & EXEMPTIONSNote that just because there is an agreement doesn’t mean all your income will not be subject to taxation. There may be thresholds within the agreements where you will be subject to double taxation if your income is over the exclusion amount. If you are living overseas, your home country may have a foreign income exclusion in place which could prevent you from being taxed on your salary in both your home country as well as your country of residence. Such exclusions often include a limit. For the United States in 2022, for example, an American living and working in Japan can claim the foreign income exclusion for up to USD 112,000 for which they will not be taxed in the United States though they are still subject to Japanese taxes. Any income over that amount will be subject to taxes in both Japan and the United States. Such exclusions, and the amounts covered, will vary by country. SOCIAL INSURANCESocial security and pension payments vary greatly from country to country as well. Again, Japan has reciprocity agreements with several countries. In Japan, social insurance refers to a system of programs that provide financial protection to individuals and families in the event of illness, injury, unemployment, or other life events that may affect their ability to work and support themselves financially. There are several types of social insurance programs in Japan, including health insurance, pension insurance, and unemployment insurance.Health insurance is mandatory for all residents of Japan, regardless of nationality. It covers the cost of medical treatment, including hospitalization, surgery, and prescription medications. There are several types of health insurance programs in Japan, including the National Health Insurance (NHI) program, which is available to all residents, and various private insurance programs.Pension insurance is also mandatory for all residents of Japan, and it provides financial support to individuals in the form of a pension after they reach a certain age or become unable to work due to disability or other circumstances. There are two main types of pension insurance in Japan: the National Pension and the Employees' Pension Insurance.Unemployment insurance is a program that provides financial assistance to individuals who are unemployed due to no fault of their own, such as a layoff or the closure of their workplace. This insurance is available to employees who have been paying into the program through their employer, and it provides a temporary income while they are looking for a new job. There are other types of social insurance programs in Japan as well, such as workers' compensation insurance, which covers the cost of medical treatment and lost wages for workers who are injured on the job, and the Childcare and Family Care Leave Insurance, which provides financial assistance to individuals who need to take time off work to care for a child or family member. If you are living in Japan, it is important to understand the social insurance programs that are available to you and ensure that you are enrolled in the appropriate programs. This will help to protect you and your family financially in the event of illness, injury, or other life events that may affect your ability to work. Essentially, social security/pension payments paid while you are working and living in one country may be credited toward your retirement in your home country, should you choose to return, so that you aren’t missing several years of payments. Much like taxes, social insurance rules, regulations, and agreements vary greatly by country. CHANGES IN TAX LAWKnowledge of tax regulations are important when working across borders. Figuring out international taxes can be a quagmire, and even if you’ve successfully navigated all the rules and regulations in the past, the laws and requirements you are subject to can and do change from year to year making it difficult to stay on top of the rules you are subject to. It may be best to consult a tax professional to answer questions specific to your situation. There are three reasons for this.Web-related skills are universal and essentialIT education is more advanced in other countriesThere are inevitably more foreigners in the work environmentWeb-related skills are universal and essentialWeb-related skills, such as programming and coding, are common throughout the world. In Japan, programming education for elementary school students has become compulsory from 2020, but countries around the world have been introducing programming education in elementary education before Japan. In Estonia, for example, programming education began in the first grade of elementary school in 2012, and in Finland, programming education started in elementary schools in 2016.Thus, programming skills are considered important throughout the world, and demand for human resources is high. According to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's "Survey on IT Human Resource Demand", Japan will have a shortage of up to 790,000 IT personnel by 2030. Australia and South Korea are also facing a shortage of IT personnel, and global demand for IT personnel is expected to continue to grow. Therefore, if you have web-based engineering skills, you can fulfill your goal of working with foreigners anywhere in the world.IT education is more advanced in other countriesIT education has started earlier in the world than in Japan, and the educational content is more extensive. In the U.K., the National Curriculum, the national standard for education, has been in place since 2013, and classes incorporating an understanding of algorithms and learning programming languages are compulsory for all grades during the compulsory education period from ages 5 to 16. The fact that this is being promoted as a national project shows that the government is committed to the project. In Hungary, education utilizing programming and ICT has been mandatory since 2003, and in the Asian country of South Korea, programming education has been introduced as an elective subject since 2007. This will be a big plus for your career. By acquiring these skills, you will be able to achieve your goal of working with foreigners not only in Japan but also in the world.Reference: 日本は遅れてる?海外のプログラミング教育の現状!/コエテコThere are inevitably more foreigners in the work environmentIn Japan, there is a shortage of web engineers due to delays in programming education. According to statistical data on foreign IT engineers in Japan published by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, the number of foreign engineers working in Japan tripled between 2008 and 2017. Since there is an overwhelming shortage of Japanese web engineers in this environment, the likelihood of working with foreigners inevitably increases. Furthermore, according to data comparing Japan and the U.S., the annual salary distribution by age for IT personnel in Japan is lower than in the U.S. Even if one achieves the highest level of annual salary in a “capability and performance-oriented” company such as a foreign-affiliated company, compared to the highest level of annual salary in the “seniority-based” system traditionally used by Japanese companies It is said that there is not much difference. On the other hand, the current situation in the U.S., where excellent IT personnel are paid high compensation, suggests that excellent personnel have been lost to the U.S. and other foreign countries. In such an environment, it can be expected that talented Japanese engineers will leave Japan in search of opportunities to work overseas, and the shortage of IT personnel in Japan will continue, leading to even more aggressive recruitment of foreign engineers. As the number of foreign engineers increases in Japan, it will be possible to fulfill the goal of working with foreigners while staying in Japan.Reference: 「外国人雇用状況」の届出状況まとめ(平成29年10月末現在)/厚生労働省 What Web-based engineers with the goal of working with foreigners should learnIn order to achieve your goal of becoming a web-based engineer who works with foreigners, you should acquire the following skills.
